How Pasadena ISD School Counselors Support Your Child’s Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) in Schools:

School counselors play a key role in helping students develop important social and emotional skills that support their success in school and life. Through guidance lessons, counselors teach SEL topics that align with the TEA comprehensive school counseling program:

  • Self-awareness/Interpersonal skills (understanding emotions, goal setting and personal strengths)
  • Self-management/Interpersonal skills (coping skills, empathy, communication and goal setting)
  • Social awareness & Relationship/Personal health & safety (boundaries, conflict resolution and safety awareness)
  • Responsible decision-making/Post-secondary planning (career days, exploration and interest surveys, course planning and student future college and career goals)

These lessons are delivered in classrooms, small groups, or individual sessions, and are often aligned with the school's SEL curriculum or framework.

Beyond lessons, counselors also support SEL by:

  • Collaborating with teachers and families to reinforce SEL strategies
  • Providing a safe space for students to talk and reflect
  • Helping students navigate challenges and build resilience
  • Promoting a positive school climate where all students feel valued

SEL is woven into the school day through activities, routines, and interactions, and counselors help ensure that every student has access to these supports. Please visit with your child’s school counselor or visit the campus website for more information on the campus guidance curriculum.
