Cockrell, Nikki

HOF Class of 2018

Nikki Cockrell helped put University of Texas softball on the national stage, rewriting the record books during her three seasons with the Longhorns. A transfer from Texas A&M, Cockrell became a cornerstone of UT’s first softball teams, pairing her offensive power and defensive reliability with the dominant pitching of former Dobie star Christa Williams to lead Texas to the Women’s College World Series in 1998—just the program’s second year of existence.

By the time she graduated in 1999, Cockrell ranked in the top five of 14 statistical categories, including school records for stolen bases (48) and fielding efficiency. A first-team All-American in 1998 and third-team All-American in 1999, she also earned multiple All-Big 12 honors and twice was named an Academic All-American. One of her defining moments came in the 1999 Big 12 Tournament, where her extra-inning home run lifted Texas past Missouri en route to the championship. That same year, she was honored as the NCAA Woman of the Year for the state of Texas.

Cockrell went on to be drafted in the Women’s Pro Softball League and, in 2006, was inducted into the University of Texas Women’s Athletics Hall of Honor. For her career, she hit 19 home runs, 35 doubles, 10 triples, drove in 93 runs, and maintained near-flawless defense with just five errors in 389 chances.

Before her collegiate success, Cockrell was already a star at Sam Rayburn High School, where she lettered four years in softball, earned first-team All-District honors three times, lettered in basketball, and ranked academically in the Top 10 of her class. In 1995, she also earned a gold medal with the USA Junior Girls National Team, setting the stage for her decorated career.
