TEAM, 1993 J.F. Dobie Girls Softball State Champions

HOF Class of 2022

The 1993 J. Frank Dobie High School softball team made history as the inaugural champions of the UIL State Fastpitch Softball Tournament, forever cementing their place in Texas high school athletics. Though young—comprised largely of freshmen and sophomores—the Lady Longhorns were talented, competitive, and resilient, guided by the senior leadership of Robin Rackley and Shannon McDonald and powered by freshman pitcher Christa Williams, who would go on to become one of the sport’s brightest stars.

The program faced early challenges when coaching changes left the team without steady leadership. Rackley and McDonald stepped up to lead practices, create lineups, and serve as mentors for their teammates, instilling the unity and determination that carried Dobie through the season. Midway through district play, the team battled setbacks, losing key games to Texas City and South Houston, which forced a high-stakes showdown with Deer Park for a playoff berth. In dramatic fashion, the Lady Longhorns upset the heavily favored Lady Deers with back-to-back wins, securing their spot in the postseason.

From there, Dobie surged through the playoffs with shutout victories over Angleton (8-0), Clear Creek (1-0), and Brazoswood (6-0) to advance to the state tournament, where they made history as the first UIL state fastpitch champions. Their improbable journey set the standard for Dobie softball and remains a defining moment in Pasadena ISD athletics.

The 1993 Dobie Lady Longhorns etched their names in Texas history as the first-ever UIL State Fastpitch Softball Champions. Playing before 5,000 fans at the Pleasant Valley SportsPlex in Austin—with Hollywood star Kevin Costner even making a guest hitting appearance—the team captured the inaugural title with grit, poise, and unforgettable moments.

Dobie opened the tournament with a 5–1 win over San Marcos, followed by a commanding 10–2 semifinal victory over El Paso Bel Air. In the championship game against Tomball, the matchup remained scoreless until the fourth inning when Christina Borsche scored on an error, giving Dobie the decisive 1–0 lead. Despite pressure from Tomball in the late innings, the Lady Longhorns executed a game-ending pickoff play from catcher Robin Rackley to Melissa Atkinson to Nicole Myers, sealing the historic win.

Christa Williams, who finished the season 18–2 with 226 strikeouts and only two earned runs allowed, was named to the All-Tournament State Team along with Rackley, Myers, and Heather Martinez. The Lady Longhorns closed their championship season with an impressive 24–3 record.

The 1993 Dobie team not only brought home the gold but also became pioneers, setting the standard for Texas high school softball and securing their legacy as one of the greatest teams in state history.
