Atkinson Elementary Students Champion Conservation Efforts Across Campus

Pasadena, TX — Atkinson Elementary third graders made a meaningful impact on environmental conservation during the 2025–2026 school year. Through hands-on learning, students tackled environmental challenges by supporting wildlife conservation and reducing waste on campus.
In partnership with the Houston Zoo, students contributed to wildlife conservation initiatives, including “adopting” Sallie the bald eagle to help protect and sustain natural habitats. On campus, they also reduced plastic waste by using two water refill stations, preventing more than 9,000 plastic bottles from entering landfills this year.
Since launching these efforts, the school has diverted more than 11,000 plastic items from landfills and natural ecosystems.
Their work earned Atkinson Elementary the Impact Houston 26 Sustainable School Badge and recognition at Rice University. Additionally, third-grade teacher and conservation organizer Amber Watson and her students received a $750 grant to continue their sustainability efforts.
This initiative highlights how students can take an active role in protecting the environment while fostering a culture of sustainability on campus.
