TEXTBOOK SELECTION AND ADOPTION

ADOPTION PROCEDURE

The following procedures shall be used to select and adopt textbooks for use in the District:

1. The Superintendent shall appoint a General Textbook Committee from v
    various textbook subcommittee members.

2. The curriculum instructional specialist of each grade level or subject area 
    for which textbooks are to be adopted shall appoint teachers in those 
    grade levels or subject areas to serve on textbook selection 
    subcommittees. Each subcommittee shall have a chairperson.

3. Each subcommittee shall examine all textbooks approved by the state 
    Board of Education for that grade level or subject area, or, if there are no 
    state approved texts, all textbooks proposed by the District.

4. Each subcommittee shall evaluate the textbooks and select one to 
    recommend for adoption by the District. The curriculum instructional 
    specialist shall serve on the subcommittee in an advisory capacity but 
    may not vote on textbook selection.

5. Each subcommittee submits its recommendation to the General 
    Textbook Committee.

6. The General Textbook committee member shall announce the 
    committee’s selection at a textbook adoption meeting called by the 
    Superintendent.

7. The Superintendent shall present the recommendations of the General 
    Textbook Committee to the Board for approval.

PUBLIC COMPLAINT PROCEDURE

When principals receive complaints from members of the public about textbooks or related materials or their use in the classroom, they shall meet with the complainant and try to resolve the complaint informally at the campus level.

If unsatisfied with the principal’s explanation, the complainant may appeal to the Associate Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction within two weeks of the informal meeting. Such appeal must be in writing, outlining the complaint in detail. The Associate Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction shall explain the procedure used to select the textbook and the reasons for selection.

If unsatisfied with the explanation of the appropriate executive director, the complainant may appeal in writing, within two weeks, to the Superintendent and thereafter in writing, within two weeks, to the Board.
