DISTRICT EDUCATION COMMITTEE

The District Education Committee shall be composed of 34 teachers, administrators, parents and community members as outlined in BQA (L). The committee shall be facilitated by the Associate Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction.

DEFINITIONS

The "Campus Administrator" category includes principals, assistant principals, counselors and diagnosticians.

"Classroom Teachers" include certified teachers, librarians, nurses, speech therapists or other certified employees other than those identified as campus administrators.

"Parents" include individuals with a child currently attending the Pasadena Independent School District. The parents shall not be an employee of P.I.S.D.

"Community members" include individuals who reside or work within the boundaries of P.I.S.D. The community member shall not be an employee of P.I.S.D.

CAMPUS NOMINATION PROCESS

Each school within each zone may nominate one person from each of the elected groups represented on the District Education Committee (DEC). Campuses whose representatives are serving the second year of their two-year term may not nominate another representative for that category from their campus.

Nominations shall be gathered through an election of campus staff within each category. Before his or her name is placed on the campus ballot, the nominee must indicate a willingness to serve on the DEC if elected. Administrators shall vote only for administrators and teachers vote only for teachers.

The name of the nominees receiving the highest number of votes at each campus in each category shall be submitted to the superintendent’s office.

DISTRICT ELECTION

Ballots will be printed listing the names and campuses of all nominees for each category within each zone. The DEC elections shall be held each year. Administrators shall vote only for administrators and teachers vote only for teachers. Individuals receiving the highest number of votes in each zone shall be designated as the representative. In the event of a tie vote, lots shall be drawn to determine the representative.

COMMITTEE APPOINTEES

In addition to the 18 teachers and eight campus administrators elected by the District’s professional staff, the superintendent shall appoint four parents and four community representatives to serve on the DEC as a means of ensuring ethnic, enrollment and geographic diversity.

SPECIAL PROVISIONS

No individual shall serve more than two consecutive years, unless he or she was named to replace a representative who resigned at mid-term. An individual who has completed a full two-year term shall be eligible to serve again on DEC after one year.

Should an individual resign during the two-year term, the person receiving the next highest number of votes in the most recent election shall be asked to complete the term.
