Lion Band performs on the steps of the state capitol for

"Arts in Education Day."

On March 10, the Symphonic Band from Thompson Intermediate School traveled to Austin to participate in “Arts Education Day at the Capitol”. Under the direction of Deborah Hirsch, the band performed several short selections on the south steps of the capitol building. This 2 day event was sponsored by the Texas Coalition for Quality Arts Education showcases groups from across the state to demonstrate for the public and the Texas legislators the importance of fine arts education in the schools.

The Thompson Band has along tradition of excellence, recently earning over 150 medals at Pasadena ISD Solo and Ensemble Contest. The band earned a Sweepstakes Award last year at UIL Concert and Sightreading Contest and annually performs at the Texas Renaissance Festival and the Splashtown Music Festival. The Thompson band has also performed the national anthem for the Houston Astros for the past 13 years and was invited to perform at the National Middle School Association Convention in 2007.

This year will be the second time that the Thompson band has been chosen to perform at “Arts Education Day at the Capitol” .

Thompson Band students again faced tough competition and captured 24 places in the Region 19 Bands. Over 600 students from all over the area performed scales and technical exercises in order to win a place in these select groups.

 

Earning a place in the Region Symphonic Band means that these students ranked in the top 5% in each section at the audition. The Thompson Band students who earned this recognition were;

Samantha Green – 3rd chair Flute

Kevin Pham – 2nd chair Oboe

Joel Arhelger

Andrew Tran

Nick Engle – 3rd chair trumpet

Peter Vu – 3rd chair French Horn

 *And Rene Escobar who was ranked as the #1 Bass Clarinet player in the region.
