Events in the Library!
Accelerated Reader - Students read books on their reading level and take tests to earn points to reach their monthly goals and receive a tag to go on a bracelet or chain necklace. The top five readers from each grade level during the spring semester will be invited to enjoy popcorn while watching a special movie!
Battle of the Books - Students may read the list of books for their grade level and participate in the Battle of the Books to be held on May 16th in the school cafeteria. All students in grades K-4th are encouraged to read and enter the battle. Applications must be turned in by May 1st and teams will be randomly selected on May 15th and announced the morning of the battle. Teams will answer questions about the books on their lists. The more books on the lists that students read the better their team's chances are of winning the battle. Winning teams will receive prizes to be announced at a later date. Children's Book Week - We will celebrate the spring Children's Book Week May 12-16th, 2008. There will be a book fair sponsored by Adventureland Books during that week and students and parents can purchase good books for summertime reading.
Pizza Hut's Book It! Program - The program began October 1st and continued through March 28th. Students that met their monthly goal received a certificate for a free pizza reward. We had many students participate in all grade levels!
Bluebonnet Breakfast - Students who read at least 5 of the Texas Bluebonnet Nominated Books for 2007 were invited to have breakfast with Mrs. Chamblee and were able to cast their vote for their favorite book. The breakfast was held on Friday morning, January 25th. The winner of the Texas Bluebonnet Award went to Lucy Nolan’s book Down Girl and Sit: On the Road.

South Shaver Iditarod Challenge - Classes selected a musher to follow during the Iditarod race held in Alaska. Announcements were made each morning beginning February 29th to update students and teachers about the race. The official race began on Sunday, March 2nd in Willow, Alaska. Students learned about Alaska and its history and geography, the sled dogs, and about the lives of the mushers. They used websites on the Internet and read books from the school library. They also got first hand information from Pam Flowers, author and adventurer, who participated in the Iditarod and visited South Shaver on Monday, February 25, 2008.
