Grade Promotion Requirements

Beginning with ninth graders in 2003-2004 and beyond, grade classification will be tied to units of credit earned. The requirements of each classification beyond freshman (ninth grade) are as follows:
FIVE (5) credits is required for promotion to grade 10 (Sophomore)
TEN (10) credits is required for promotion grade 11 (Junior)
SIXTEEN (16) credits is required for promotion grade 12 (Senior)

Graduation Requirements

Students have three graduation options listed below. If you would like further information, please call the counseling office at 713-944-2450, or read the
High School Course Selection and Registration Guide.
  • The Minimum High School Program, which requires successful completion of 22 state approved credits. Students enrolling in Spring 2003 or after may not opt for this program without administrative review and approval.
  • The Recommended High School Program, which requires successful completion of 24 state approved credits (The Class of 2011 will require 26 credits - including 4-years of Math, Science, English and Social Studies). All students enrolling in Spring 2003 or after will automatically be placed on this plan.
  • The Distinguished Achievement Program, which includes the completion of advanced requirements - such as AP courses and additional Foreign Language, Math and Science electives - in addition to the Recommended High School Program.

DISTINGUISHED ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM

Students who participate in the Distinguished Achievement Program must complete the 24-credit Recommended High School Program, in addition to three credits in the same foreign language, and receive any combination of FOUR of the advanced measures listed below:
  • Original research/project,
  • a score of three or above on The College Board Advanced Placement Examination,
  • a score of four or above on an International Baccalaureate examination,
  • a score on the PSAT that qualifies a student for recognition as:
    • a Commended Scholar or higher by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, or
    • a part of the National Hispanic Scholar Program of The College Board, or
    • a part of the National Achievement Scholarship Program of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, and/or
  • Academic college courses with a grade point of 3.0 or higher (using the college's grading scale)
