A Sam Rayburn High School scholar athlete has been selected by Team USA head
coach Mike Johnston to compete in
the NFL Global Junior Championship VIII during the week of Super Bowl XXXVIII.
Linebacker DANIEL ADAMEK will line up as part of a 36-man roster that will take on junior all-star teams from Russia, Mexico, Japan and Canada on January 28 and 31 at Houston’s Tully Stadium.
The NFL Global Junior Championship VIII is an all-star tournament played annually in the Super Bowl host city. The 2004 action begins at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 28 at Tulley Stadium (south of I-10) and USA first plays Russia (2.40pm), then Canada (4.20pm), Japan (6.50pm) and Mexico (8.30pm). The round robin shootout games are played over two seven-minute halves.
The top two teams from the first round standings will meet in the Championship Game at 4:00 p.m. at Tully Stadium following medal games on the eve of Super Bowl XXXVIII, Saturday, January 31.
“We were looking for players who are versatile and can help us out at a number of positions,” explained coach Johnston when revealing his selection. “On defense we feel we’ve got some outstanding talent and we have some good speed and size. We feel like we’ve got two really fine quarterbacks and our running backs are two of the best in the state.”
The Team USA roster includes players from 25 Houston-Harris County area high schools who were chosen from a list of more than 150 players nominated by coaches at 72 schools. The scholar athletes had to record a 3.0 GPA through their junior year to be eligible and a maximum of three players per school is allowed.
Tickets cost $6 per day and are available from Stratford, Memorial, Katy,
Cy-Fair and Cy-Creek high schools, which will all host foreign players during
