PBS:  News Hour Vote 2008   PBS' NewsHour provides this comprehensive coverage of the primaries and the election with frequently-updated articles on the latest developments and issues.

Maps of War  Flash presentations that illustrate geopolitical aspects of war and religion. The creator of the site does not name him/herself, saying only that the animations are intended to be unbiased and factual

   

 U. S. Presidential Speeches Tag Cloud Watch the changes in U.S. presidential politics and policy over time using this "tag cloud" of word frequencies from presidential speeches (and a few before we even HAD a president) 1776-2007. If you have never seen a tag cloud, it is simply a way of using the relative size of words to show the frequency with which that word appears. Slide the slider across the timeline at the top of the tag cloud to see words appear, shrink, disappear, etc from the language of U.S. leaders over time.

 2008 Presidential Election Interactive Map and History of Electoral College:  270 to Win The interactive map is fairly simple, but can be adapted to show the peculiar way that "all or nothing" Electoral College voting state by state can affect the outcome of an election. We need look no further than the most recent 2004 election to see its impact in real terms. Users can highlight a particular state and get a historical view of electoral votes for the republican or democratic candidate in past presidential elections.

Called America's Library, this site offers legislative information, articles and digital images,  American Memory, America's Story, and Global Gateway links to World culture and information.  Starting with the Index or the Site Map will be helpful if when browsing this site.

 

From the Library of Congress' American Memory site, this searchable database includes the Journals of the Continental Congress, American State Papers, U.S. Serial Set (incomplete), and the journals and debates of Congress. Special features include a timeline of U.S. history as seen through the documentary record, Indian land sessions, the Journal of the Congress of the Confederate States of America, and more.

 

Jensen is a scholar with many books and articles; he was professor of history for over 35 years at several schools, including the University of Illinois, Harvard, Michigan, West Point, and Moscow State University. His recent books (coauthored) include The Civil War on the Web (2nd edition 2003), Trans-Pacific Relations : America, Europe, and Asia in the Twentieth Century (2003), World War II on the Web (2002) and Americans at War: Society, Culture, and the Homefront (2005).

The American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress  collects and preserves audio- and video-taped oral histories, along with documentary materials such as letters, diaries, maps, photographs, and home movies of America's war veterans and those who served in support of them.  This site is still growing, but it is worth visiting.

 
 

Gallup is a polling organization that gathers information and polls on a wide variety of issues and concerns, both American and International.  This site provides this polling information and news on American and World events.

 

CensusScope is an easy-to-use tool for investigating U.S. demographic trends, brought to you by the Social Science Data Analysis Network (SSDAN) at the University of Michigan.

Find out what history looked like to the people who lived it. Read newspapers of the time to find reports on such events as the Louisiana Purchase, the fall of the Alamo, the Bill of Rights, Jack the Ripper, and more; listen to RealAudio recordings of P.T. Barnum, Amelia Earhardt, Teddy Roosevelt and others.
