Introduction with Thesis Statement

English IV-A – Mrs. Emmons

Follow the examples below and write an introduction with a thesis statement for your paper:

Introductions should be interesting, inviting and have a catchy lead.

They should not sound like body paragraphs -- full of facts, and information that doesn’t lead to anything.

You should use thoughtful transitions, and logical sequencing to lead to your thesis statement.

Your thesis statement should be the heart of your paper and it should be able to stand alone

if separated from the introductory paragraph. It should mention your topic by name, and t

ell the reader the idea(s) that will be presented in your paper, all in one statement.

Sample Introduction with Thesis Statement:

“Ring around the roses, a pocket full of posies, ashes, ashes, we all fall down,” sounds innocent enough, ironically, this childrens’ nursery rhyme personified one of the most horrific calamities in history. For a great fraction of both the fourteenth and seventeenth centuries, a terminal disease contaminated the continent of Europe.  Filthy, unsanitary living conditions brought about and continued to fuel a horrible epidemic aptly titled the bubonic plague. People would receive huge, disgusting sores, or buboes, on their bodies and drop dead within days.  This outbreak known as the  black death completely eliminated almost half of Euorope’s population before finally disappearing into the history books.

Practice your thesis:

Topic: ______________________

Main Idea(s): _______________________________________________

_________________________________________________________.

Now write your thesis in ONE statement:

___________________________________________________________

____________________________________________________________

____________________________________________________.

Now write your introduction here and add the thesis statement at the end:
