The Developmental Guidance and Counseling Program     Content

The Texas Education Agency has developed a model program for school counselors in Texas to implement.

The domains covered through this program are academic, career, and personal / social. These domains are addressed through four types of services as outlined below.

  • Guidance Curriculum: Provides guidance content in a systematic way to all students. The purpose of this component is to develop awareness, skills, and the application of skills needed for everyday life.

  • Individual Planning: This component assists students in monitoring and understanding their own development and is intended to help students plan and establish goals.

  • Responsive Services: Intended to address the immediate concerns of students with the goal of prevention and intervention.

  • System Support: This component includes program and staff support activities.
Confidentiality

It is critical that students have a safe place to discuss their academic, career, and social / personal concerns without fear that what they say will be shared with others.

Professional school counselors are ethically obligated to keep the information that students and / or parents share with them in the context of a counseling relationship private and confidential.

Counselors will not share what students tell them unless the student authorizes the disclosure, legal requirements demand that the information be shared, or if, in the counselor's professional judgment, there is a clear and present danger to the student or to others.
