his Heifer

March 14th and were both awarded $1,250 towards the
purchase of a new heifer to be raised throughout the year and shown
at the 2009 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
Congratulations to Mario
Reyna and Jaime Lira! They recently won awards in the Houston Livestock
Show and Rodeo Quick Draw competition. Just their being selected to compete
in the contest, which took only fifty entrants from a contestant pool of
over 460 entrants, is worth congratulations; but both students also placed
in the competition. The students competed in the Still Life division of the
Quick Draw contest. The contest required the students to create their best
drawing, while at the rodeo, and within a fifty minute time frame. Mario
took home a third place win and Jaime won Class Champion (that is “First
Place” in non-rodeo speak!). Great job guys! Your talent makes PHS and
PISD shine!
Remember: If you plan to
attend the rodeo, be sure to visit the Hayloft Gallery where you will see
their art on display

Over the past weekend our BEST (Boosting Engineering Science and
Technology) Robotics team participated in the Space City Tournament at Galena
Park High School.
An extremely good field and some minor problems prevented our robot from
achieving a winning position in the competition, but our team did win first
place in the Space City Safety Award. This is the first year this award has been
given and its presence shows this organization’s commitment to safe operation in
the same manner that industry and schools stress safe working conditions and
practices.
Our next formal competition will be the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition
of Science and Technology) Robotics competition. This is the major robotics
event of the year and will begin the building period the first weekend of 2008.
Any student with a good discipline record and a desire to participate is
encouraged to join this organization composed of professional engineers and
craftsmen from various area industries and teachers and students from all PISD
high schools.
If you are interested in this competition see Mr. Cleveland in room 1314 or Mr.
