It
was in the Fall of 1956 that Parks Elementary opened its doors to the children of the
community, but due to construction problems only half of the classrooms were available for
use. Classes doubled up and every available space was used for teaching, including the
book room, teacher lounge, cafeteria and stage. After the school was completed, 26
classrooms accommodated 405 students. The school served children from first grade through sixth until 1964 when sixth grade classes were moved to San Jacinto Intermediate. We also had the only special education classes for children with partial hearing and partial sight. Today, Parks has 45 teachers and 580 students in grades pre-kindergarten through fifth. We also have classes for gifted and talented, special education and bilingual education. As part of the Renewal 2000 building program, which included construction from the 1995 bond election, our campus gained classrooms, as well as a renovated library and office area. As part of the "Make Room for Children" bond, a kindergarten wing was added and opened in August 2001. It contains four classrooms, a teacher workroom and two bookrooms. |
