MissionCommunities in Schools
Mentoring Programs
match students in Pasadena schools with community
members. These volunteers provide consistent support and guidance
on a one-on-one basis to encourage students to successfully learn,
stay in school, and prepare for life.
Philosophy
This mentoring program will
provide youth with consistent caring adults who will serve as role
models as they develop strong relationship skills and encourage
students to be successful in school.
Goals/Purposes
The goals of the program are
to provide youth with one-on-one caring relationships with adult
mentors so as to improve school performance, discourage risky
behaviors, and promote self esteem and social responsibility. This
program will enable students to be active contributors to their
families, schools and community and will help the youth grow to be
healthy, caring and responsible individuals.
Program Guidelines
The mentor-mentee pairs will
meet for a total of four hours per month from 4:00 to 5:00 P.M. at
the student’s home campus. Current program schools are Miller,
Queens, Parkview, Southmore and South Houston Intermediate. Mentors
must complete a written application and background check and must
attend training that will be provided to them. Students and parents
must complete enrollment and parent consent forms. While enrollment
in this program is voluntary, students and their parents must make a
commitment to be actively involved. Parents will be expected to be
active participants in their child’s education.
Benefits
Students will improve in academic performance and
school attendance, increase self-esteem, develop character and
leadership skills, learn non-violent problem solving and gain
respect for others. The mentoring program will build relationships
and provide positive role models, who will encourage students to
reach their potential. Mentors are provided with the satisfaction of
giving back to their community and being a positive impact on the
life of a young person.
