South Houston High School students, teachers and alumni are
ready to paint the town in Trojan red as they prepare to
celebrate the school’s 50th anniversary on Nov. 2-3.
The school has a variety of festivities planned to celebrate
South Houston High’s golden anniversary during its
homecoming weekend. Former students are invited to a “meet
and greet” reception, tours of the school and music from 7-9
p.m., Nov. 2 at the campus, with a pre-game Fall Festival
planned for the next day from 9 a.m.-12 p.m., Nov. 3 at
South Houston High School.
In addition, all South Houston alumni are invited to gather
for a group panoramic photo before the game and the past
principals of the school will be honored during a special
ceremony. The homecoming game with Dobie will then kick off
at 1 p.m.
“Our history is one of pride and accomplishment,” said Steve
Fullen, South Houston High School principal. “The past 50
years of history serves as a strong foundation. Some things
around us may have been affected by significant change over
the past five decades, but the integrity, commitment, and
mission of this high school remains constant. We invite all
former and current students to celebrate this special
occasion with us.”
South Houston High history
The school opened in 1957 under the leadership of longtime
Pasadena ISD administrator, the late Carroll Teague. During
South Houston’s first year of operation, the student body
only consisted of sophomores and juniors. When school
started that year, construction was not yet complete and
students had to attend classes at Pasadena High and Kruse
Elementary. When the new freshman class entered the
following year, 832 students called South Houston home.
It was at that time, a fierce rivalry had developed between
Pasadena and South Houston.
“Prior to that time, the community’s loyalties were focused
on one school,” said Herman Williams, local businessman,
civic leader and a graduate of South Houston’s Class of
1964. “It was the beginning of many traditions that were
established. We had some memorable times in those days. It
was something I’ll never forget.”
Nine past-principals served South Houston over the years,
including Teague (1957-1962), George Morton (1962-1963),
Elmer Bondy (1963-1968), Walter Matthys (1968-1975), Hugh
McGaugh (1975-1981), Jimmy Barber (1981-1991), Doris Barnes
(1991-2002) and Deborah Aubin (2002-2007). Fullen became
principal this fall when Aubin retired.
