“This is the first time that we have had this many pieces of students artwork featured in this calendar,” said Shannon Raygoza, Pasadena ISD’s lead teacher for visual arts. “Our students and our teachers have done an amazing job throughout the district.” Sergio Rangel, a student of Victor Raygoza at Pasadena Memorial High School, took top honors and a $500 cash award in the Senior Division. As a result, the visual art department of Pasadena Memorial has been awarded a $1,500 grant from The Dow Chemical Company. Carolina Martinez, a student of Tisha Tyler at Queens Intermediate, took first place in the Junior Division. Carolina also was awarded $500, and Queens Intermediate received a $1,500 grant for its visual arts program. Pasadena winners who took second place include Alex Clark, also a student of Victor Raygoza at Pasadena Memorial, and Luis Gomez, also a student of Tisha Tyler at Queens Intermediate. Both received a $400 cash award. Pasadena winners who took third place – and a $300 cash award – include Garret Rogers, a student at Pasadena Memorial High School for the Senior Division, and Johnathan Trexler, a student at San Jacinto Intermediate. Both Garret and Johnathan are students of Adam Malek. Additional Pasadena students who won Honorable Mention Awards – and a $200 cash award -- in the Senior Division include: Juan Barrateo, a student of Greg Giles at Pasadena Memorial; Sam Stewart, a student of Victor Raygoza at Pasadena Memorial; and Mayra Valenciano, a student of Daniel Reyna at Pasadena Memorial. Separately, Candy Hernandez, a student of Tisha Tyler at Queens Intermediate, received an Honorable Mention and $200 cash award in the Junior Division. Talented junior and senior high school students enrolled in the visual art programs from the Channelview, Clear Creek, Deer Park, Galena Park, Goose Creek, La Porte and Pasadena School districts participate in the Art Exhibition and Calendar Design contest. Students present unique and compelling interpretations of the contest theme, which was “Chemistry” Imagine the Possibilities” for the 2009-2010 calendar.
