Beverly Hills Intermediate applies for $15,000 grant

Beverly Hills Intermediate has applied for a $15,000 grant from the Hamburger Helper Foundation to provide an eight-week summer program at the school. The grant is designed for organizations whose projects will provide beneficial services to the community around them. Persons may learn more about BHI’s grant request and log in their comments and words of support by logging on to www.myhometownhelper.com. go under the Find a Project category, type in Texas under the state listing and Beverly Hills Intermediate under the search listing.

Ben Portis, physical education teacher at the school, said the campus is applying for the grant because the school is isolated between two city recreation departments that do not provide services for the intermediate school age group which is really needed during the summer months. He said many parents from the Beverly Hills neighborhood population work, and studentsare left unsupervised for long periods during the day.

Should BHI be awarded the grant, the summer program would educate the students/families on nutrition, fitness, and character development. The program will encourage a life-long interest in health/wellness, as well as serve the community by providing activities at a time when good role-models and positive choices are critical to youth development and future success. Activities will be provided in two gyms, a weight room, dance room, outdoor fields, and a running track. Four certified coaches/teachers will supervise all activities, with input from health/fitness experts, the school counselor, and the CSHAC.

The success of the program will be measured on student/family pre/post surveys, the completion of student/family nutrition journals, progress charts of student fitness goals, and records of student attendance and community support to continue the summer program in subsequent years.
