Thirteen
JROTC cadets from Sam Rayburn High School participated in a JROTC
Leadership Camp at Sam Houston State University recently.
The event was hosted by Lt. Col. Rick King, head of the Sam Houston
State Bearkat Military Science Department and the Bearkat ROTC
Battalion. Members of the Sam Rayburn JROTC spent several days
participating in many activities, including testing their skills in
the obstacle and leaders’ reaction courses. The cadets also took
part in land navigation and basic leadership activities.
During the Sam Rayburn cadets visit to SHSU, they had an opportunity
to spend some time on campus during freshman orientation and visited
the Visitor’s Center and the new Recreation Center.
The 13 JROTC cadets were selected from the Sam Rayburn JROTC program
of over 200 students. They have all successfully passed TAKS, have a
4.0 GPA or higher, are members of at least one high school
organization or team, have met high physical fitness standards and
hold leadership positions within JROTC.
The Rayburn cadets’ JROTC instructor is retired Lt. Col. Alan
Mooneyham, former head of the Bearkat Military Science Department.
“The Leadership camp teaches basic leadership and self-discipline,
while conducting it on a great university campus like Sam Houston
exposes high school students to an achievable alternative after high
school,” Mooneyham said.
King awarded each of the Sam Rayburn cadets with their camp
completion certificates, recognized seven for earning the RECONDO
Badge and presented two other cadets with a Bearkat Battalion
Commander’s Coin. |
