Sam Rayburn Colorguard wins awards

Sam Rayburn High School’s 2007-2008 Colorguard Officers Kristen Palmer, Ashley Wacker and Maria De Leon have been invited to perform at the 2008 Capital One Bowl halftime show in Orlando, Fla. in January after being named to the All American Marching Auxiliaries team during MA’s recent summer camp.

The MA camp was held at the University of Dallas in Irving, Texas, with more than 200 participants. The officers received instruction and training in dynamic field and competition routines, choreography construction and musical phrasing, leadership classes, team building and motivational activities, and daily bodywork, technique and movement.

The first-timers showed off their flags and rifles at the camp, walking away with new routines and numerous awards. The trio claimed three spirit sticks for their enthusiasm, spirit and great attitude, and each officer received an All Performer Ribbon, which is granted to individuals who are attentive and enthusiastic throughout class as well as demonstrate mastery of skills.

All three officers won multiple Superior and Excellent ribbons as individuals for the work put into the routines they showed at the close of each day. De Leon was also awarded the Honor Roll Medal, which is given to the best of the All Star Ribbon recipients. Only nine medals were awarded during camp.

The girls also brought home a Grand Champion trophy, which is awarded to the top team that performs a camp routine the last day with stellar precision, technique, showmanship and memory.

“I am extremely proud of these girls and all the hard work and dedication they have put into being a great officer line,” said Rayburn Colorguard Director Jennifer Edwards. “The officers and the entire Colorguard are extremely excited at what the year holds in store for them.”
