Board approves names for two
new middle schools

Two new middle schools now being constructed in Pasadena ISD now have an identity as the district’s Board of Trustees recently approved naming the campuses after two distinguished educators.

Ernesteen Milstead Middle School and Carter Lomax Middle School will both open for fifth and sixth grade students in 2007-2008. Milstead Middle School will be located on Roberts Road, off of Highway 3, between Edgebrook and South Shaver. Lomax Middle School will be located on Genoa-Red Bluff Road behind Pasadena Memorial High School.

Both Milstead and Lomax were longtime teachers and administrators in the district and were well-known among their colleagues and students.

Milstead graduated from the University of Houston with a bachelor of science degree in education in August 1941 and began teaching in Pasadena ISD at South Houston Elementary in September 1942. While teaching, Milstead continued her education at the University of Houston, gaining her masters degree in 1946. After a year’s leave of absence to teach in Germany, she returned to teach fourth grade at South Houston until 1957 when she transferred to Queens Elementary. In 1960, Milstead was chosen to open A. B. Freeman as principal where she served until her retirement in 1986. She passed away in 2001.

Lomax served Pasadena ISD for 33 years, first as a coach and then as a campus administrator. He graduated from Southwest Texas State Teachers College in 1941 with a degree in history and physical education. He went immediately into the Air Force where he served for 52 months. After his discharge, he coached in Kingsville ISD and then went to Sugar Land ISD where he coached for two years.

Lomax joined Pasadena ISD at Pasadena High School as head basketball/ assistant football coach for 10 years. At that time, he moved to Jackson Intermediate School as assistant principal and took over the principal position in 1961. Lomax next moved to South Houston High School as assistant principal before taking on the challenge of opening Sam Rayburn High School where he served as principal for 17 years before retiring in 1984. He now resides in the Brazosport area.

Principals for the new schools were named in October. Shannon Trejo is serving as the principal for Milstead Middle School and Norma Penny is the principal for Lomax Middle School.
