In the news:
South Houston football player named
First Team Academic All-State selection

Agustin Yanez makes his presence felt on the football field, but he is also known for tackling the books with authority.

In recognition of his commitment on the field and in the classroom, the Texas High School Coaches Association recently named the South Houston High School outside linebacker to the Academic All-State First Team. Yanez was nominated by SHHS head football coach Al Campo.

Being voted to the Academic All-State team by the THSCA recognizes outstanding performance in high schools sports as well as the classroom. In addition to this honor, Yanez is currently the leading candidate for valedictorian for the SHHS graduating class of 2007.

“Here’s a guy that’s number one in the class, who has great character and is a leader, “ Campo said. “I think Agustin exemplifies character by doing the right thing. He leads a lot by his example on and off the field. I really thought he had a strong chance. It didn’t really surprise me, he really deserved the selection to the first team and I’m hoping maybe this will inspire other athletes to achieve this.”

Along with football, Yanez participates on the SHHS basketball and baseball teams.

Yanez was in a state of shock when he discovered that he had been selected to the First Team Academic All State.

“I had no idea that I had been nominated,” Yanez said. “Any time when you’re talking about any kind of award that is all-state, it is a big honor. I thank coach Campo for nominating me.”

Yanez is vice president of the SHHS Student Council, president of the SHHS National Honor Society, president of his senior class and also serves on Superintendent’s Advisory Committee.

After high school, Yanez plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin in the McCombs School of Business. He also plans to enter the honors program at the university as well.
Yanez also gave some advice to individuals that are headed along his path of excellence in academics and sports.

“First of all, you need to dream big,” Yanez said. “Always chase your dream and work hard at it.”
