Sam Rayburn student goes the extra mile
to help school district police officers' toy drive

When it comes to helping others in need, it is a duty that Sam Rayburn High School student Randy Rowell takes seriously. And because of his efforts, many children in the Pasadena area will have a brighter holiday.

Rowell single-handedly raised $1,000 from outside sources, collected 18 toys and got a donation of 141 Happy Meal toys to donate to the Pasadena ISD Police Officers’ Association annual toy drive.

“Randy is just an awesome kid,” said Sam Rayburn assistant principal Jamie Burt. “He is always helping others and this is just another example of how he goes the extra mile to give back to others in need.”

Members of the association were scheduled to deliver the toys to families during the holidays.

“I can’t say enough about what Randy has done to help,” said Amber Murphy of the Pasadena ISD Police Officers’ Association. “It shows a lot about his character.”

Although the final totals are not in, the association estimates that the drive netted more than 200 toys and more than $2,000 raised for needy families.

In addition to Rowell’s efforts, many other Pasadena ISD students and employees made contributions to the cause.

"We appreciate the generosity of the students, teachers and all those who made donations," Murphy said. "Everyone who contributed certainly made a happier holiday for those in need.”
