Memorial's Snelson named finalist
for Touchdown Club's Coach of the Year

Pasadena Memorial High School head football coach John Snelson was a finalist for the Touchdown Club of Houston’s Coach of the Year Award.

In his second year at the Memorial helm and the team’s fourth year of varsity play, he guided the Mavericks to the third round of the Class 5A Division II playoffs. The Mavericks ended the season with a 9-3 overall record. He also led the team to the first round of the playoffs in his first season in 2006.

The Mavericks generated much excitement this season, including playoff wins against Baytown Lee and Brazoswood. Memorial then faced Katy in the Regional Semifinal game at Rice Stadium. The Mavericks had the Tigers by the tail as they jumped out to an early lead, but Katy – ranked No. 1 in the state and No. 4 in the nation – pulled ahead of Memorial in the second half. More than 20,000 fans were in attendance to watch the Memorial-Katy game.

Snelson had the opportunity to coach his son, Bo, who proved to be one of the leading runningbacks in the Houston area. Bo Snelson rushed for 2,134 yards this season and was among the top five rushers in the area. The two Snelsons also had much support from wife and mother Mandy Snelson, who is a teacher at Memorial.
