Number of exemplary, recognized campuses climbs

Academic achievement continues upward in the Pasadena Independent School District with more than half of the district’s campuses receiving exemplary or recognized ratings.

According to accountability ratings from the Texas Education Agency, 18 Pasadena ISD campuses earned exemplary ratings and an additional 17 schools achieved recognized status for their performance on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills test.

“This is a tribute to the hard work and dedication of all of our teachers, principals and students,” said Dr. Kirk Lewis, Pasadena ISD superintendent. “We’re very excited about these results and it reflects the spirit of everyone working together to do what’s best for kids.”

Overall, the district received an academically acceptable rating, but the gains at many individual campuses show that achievement is constantly rising. Last year, nine schools earned exemplary ratings, while 24 schools achieved recognized status. In 1997-98, two schools received exemplary ratings and 22 campuses earned recognized status.

Lewis said the district plans to appeal the ratings of two of the Pasadena ISD campuses and he hopes to see positive results of those appeals by December.

“We showed gains in many different areas,” Lewis said. “We do still have some areas where we need to focus some attention, but I am confident we will be successful. As our teachers and staff have shown time and again, they are committed to making great things happen when it comes to educating our students.”
