In the last few weeks there has been a lot of information in the media about H1N1 flu (swine flu). We want to assure you that, as a school district, we are taking all possible steps to reduce the spread of any type of flu when the viruses appear. 

The directions for schools from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) are different from last year. The CDC has said that our schools will not be closed down due to one suspected case as they were last year. Instead, the CDC has issued new guidelines for students and staff members that may have H1N1 flu or seasonal flu. These guidelines are:

·        Students and staff with flu-like illness should stay home until at least 24 hours after they no longer have a fever or signs of a fever (without the use of ibuprofen or acetaminophen)

·        The 7 day period away from school will only be recommended for those suffering more severe flu conditions. 

We will be emphasizing the need for good hygiene. We ask that you stress these at home, also. Good personal hygiene habits prevent many illnesses.

·        Wash hands often with soap and water or hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available. Wash for at least 20 seconds

·        Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. If there is not a tissue available, cough or sneeze into your elbow or shoulder, not your hands.

·        Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth

·        Stay home if you are sick.  

Our custodians will be cleaning common areas and items (such as doorknobs) often with disinfectants to prevent the spread of germs. 

If a child becomes sick at school, parents will be contacted to pick him/her up to prevent spreading the virus. Please make certain that your emergency contact information is always up to date in the school office. 

We hope that the above precautions will keep all types of flu to a minimal level this year. If the flu becomes more severe, the CDC may issue new guidelines which we will pass on to you.

En las estas últimas semanas, los medios de comunicación han ofrecido mucha información acerca de la influenza H1N1 (influenza porcina). Les queremos asegurar que estamos tomando todas las medidas posibles, como distrito escolar, para reducir la propagación de cualquier tipo de influenza cuando aparecen los virus.

Las instrucciones emitidas por los Centros para el Control de Enfermedades (CDC, por su sigla en inglés) son distintas a las del año pasado. Los CDC han indicado que no se cerrarán nuestras escuelas debido a un caso sospechado, como lo hicieron el año pasado. Más bien, los CDC han emitido nuevas directrices para los alumnos y personal que pueden padecer de influenza H1N1 o la influenza de temporada. Estas directrices son:

·        Los alumnos y personal que tienen una enfermedad parecida a la influenza deben quedarse en casa hasta pasar un mínimo de 24 horas sin fiebre y sin indicios de una fiebre (sin el uso de ibuprofeno o acetaminofeno).

·        Solamente se recomendará el período de 7 días fuera de la escuela para las personas que sufren condiciones más severas de influenza.

Resaltaremos la necesidad de la buena higiene. Les pedimos también poner énfasis sobre esto en casa. Los hábitos de buen higiene personal previenen muchas enfermedades.

·        Lavarse las manos con frecuencia, usando jabón y agua o desinfectante de manos si no hay jabón y agua disponible. Lavarse por un mínimo de 20 segundos.

·        Tapar la boca y nariz con un pañuelo desechable al toser o estornudar. Si no tiene un pañuelo desechable, debe taparse con el codo u hombro cuando estornuda o tose, no con sus manos.

·        Evitar tocar sus ojos, nariz o boca.

·        Si está enfermo, quedarse en casa.

Nuestro personal de aseo limpiará frecuentemente con desinfectantes las áreas y los artículos comunes (como las perillas de las puertas), para impedir la propagación de microbios.

Si un alumno se enferma en la escuela, se les llamará a los padres para recogerlo a fin de evitar transmitir el virus. Favor de asegurarse de mantener siempre al día la información de contacto de emergencia que tiene la oficina escolar para usted.

Esperamos que las precauciones anteriores mantendrán a un nivel mínimo todo tipo de influenza este año. Si la influenza se hace más severa, es posible que los CDC emitan nuevas directrices, las cuales les haremos llegar a ustedes.
