CHOIR INFORMATION

Music exists in all cultures because it provides an aesthetic experience that is unlike any other.  No other art form can duplicate the variety of perception that results from musical performance.  The student who participates in choir is paving the way for a lifetime of musical enjoyment, whether it be listening or performing.  Although participation in choir provides nonmusical benefits such as developing a sense of responsibility, learning to work as a team, and feeling a sense of accomplishment in a job well done, the primary purpose of courses in choral music is to develop skills that are necessary to create beautiful music.

The Miller Choir is a program designed for 6th-8th grade students to experience music and musical expression.  We will have several performances a year.

CLASS PROCEDURES

A.    This is a performing choir.  Membership in this organization carries many extra privileges and pleasures as well as extra duties and responsibilities.  Only your best is good enough.

  1. Materials
    1. Every student needs to have the following materials everyday:

a.       A sharpened pencil

b.      Notebook paper

c.       Folder

    1. Every student will be provided a choir folder and two pencils at the beginning of the school year.  Your student will be charged $.50 to replace any damaged folder.  Damages will include writing anywhere on the folder, excessive tears, and anything that will cause the folder to be unusable in the future.
    2. Miller Intermediate will also provide sheet music for all choir students.  Any damaged or lost music will be charged (current replacement cost from supplier) to the student responsible for the music.
  1. Performances
    1. It is mandated by the State Board of Education that all choirs be provided with performance opportunities
    2. All choir members are expected to attend and participate in every performance.
    3. An unexcused absence from a performance will result in a zero.  Excused absences can be made up with written assignments.
    4. A written note must be presented to the director explaining the absence at the next class period.
    5. Transportation by parent/guardian needs to be provided on certain activities.
  2. Rehearsals
    1. If we are to have an excellent program, before and after school rehearsals are necessities.  Extra rehearsals will be kept to a minimum.  A monthly calendar will be sent home with each student.
    2. Students will receive participation grades for attendance at all rehearsals.
    3. The schedules for sectionals and rehearsals for Region, Solo & Ensemble, and sectionals will be presented at the beginning of every month.
    4. A written excuse must be turned in for any missed rehearsal at the next class period.

  1. Homework
    1. Homework will include practicing music learned in class, memorizing songs, and studying for exams.
    2. If a student shows a weakness in a particular skill, remedial work may be sent home on an individual basis.
  2. Uniforms
    1. The uniforms will be as follows:

a.       Sixth Grade- Tan Pants, white shirt, and dark colored shoes

b.      Girls Choir- Black skirt (knee length or longer), long-sleeve white shirt, black hose, black dress shoes

c.       Boys Choir- Black dress pants, white shirt, black socks, black shoes

d.      The students will also vote on having an optional uniform using the Miller Choir T-shirt.  More information will be presented to each student in late August.

  1. Eligibility
    1. Choir concerts fall into two categories:

Curricular Activities- Christmas Concert, Spring Concert, Pop Show, Sixth Grade Festival, Musicals, Fall Concert

Extra-Curricular Activities- Region Choir, Solo & Ensemble, UIL Contest

    1. In compliance with HB72, students must maintain an average of 70 in each class during the six-week grading period in order to be considered eligible to participate in extra-curricular activities.  Ineligible students may regain their eligibility if at the end of the three weeks of the next grading period all of their grades are 70 or better.
  1. Fundraising
    1. The Miller Choir will participate in one or two fund-raising activities a year.  Since all students benefit from the funds generated, I expect every child to participate.  More detailed information will be sent home as fund-raising time approaches.
