Meador Elementary opened its doors on December 12, 1963 with 495 students. Its enrollment originally encompassed a much greater geographic area, but the population in the Southbelt area grew to such an extent that there are now five additional schools that service the same area. Meador’s enrollment has grown to approximately 700 students per year.

The staff consists of 35 classroom teachers, seven support teachers, a part-time dyslexia specialist, a full-time counselor and a full-time registered nurse. The 13 clerical and instructional aides contribute much to Meador as well.

Meador has many different programs for its students. Our student council helps in the office in the mornings collecting attendance and delivering correspondence to teachers. They also oversee the recycling program at the school, collecting paper from individual classrooms and depositing it in the recycling bin. Funds are raised for Meador through the recycling effort.

Meador’s pre-kindergarten program is the only one in the Southbelt area, and has four half-day sections. Eligible students are either financially disadvantaged or Limited English Proficient. Regular education, bilingual education and ESL education is offered.

For the past four years, we have participated in STARBASE, a federally funded program that seeks to create student interest in math and science. Its focus is designed around the aerospace industry and actually takes students out of the classroom and into an aerospace facility. The students participate one day a week for six weeks in such projects as building rockets, touring airplane hangers and other lessons taught by aerospace professionals.

Meador’s history of technological innovation began in 1987 when they piloted the Writing to Read program in which kindergarten children read and type words on the computer. Student computer stations were also piloted at Meador in 1989. Six computer stations were installed in each classroom, and the students received intensive math and reading lessons through this multi-media format. The program was so successful, the school board voted to implement it in all 33 Pasadena ISD elementary schools for the 1991-92 school year. Two state of the art, Compaq computer labs opened in 1996 to train students in computer productivity and enhance their curriculum.

Meador was recently renovated as a result of the 1995 Bond Issue.  A new fifth grade wing, a library, and a new office complex were added.  Thank you, voters!

Meador is the first educational stepping stone for many children and their success is the primary concern to our staff.

Meador received an "exemplary" rating from the State of Texas for academic performance in 2001-2002.  Meador students are the best!
