The Accelerated Reader (AR) Program is a motivational program that encourages students to read. Reading these books becomes an important element of the student’s independent study time.

At Matthys, books that are AR are coded with an orange dot on the spine and with the reading level written on it. We presently have over 8,000 test books and these are located throughout the library shelves.

… Students select the book(s) of their choice according to their reading level, they read the book, and then take the test. This is done either in their classroom or in the library.

This test is computerized featuring 5, 10, or 20 multiple-choice comprehension questions. The program tells the student how many questions he or she answered correctly. It shows the answers for the questions missed, and awards reading points. Reading points are based on the book’s point value, length and difficulty of the book, and the number of correct answers.

Reading points give students instant reinforcement for their efforts. It also provides the teacher with a measurement of each student’s performance as well as seeing the child’s progress in the reading program.

Students from K-5^th grade participate in this program at Matthys.

The following are rewards used for AR points:

Students get a reading sticker for every 10 points they accumulate in the AR. They earn a Reading Patch every 20 points,  At 150 points and beyond they receive other prizes in addition to the patch.
