Podcasting has become a "buzz" phrase meaning several
different things. The original concept of podcasting was to
download radio type talk shows to an MP3 player. The term "pod"casting
came from the popularity of the iPod but iPods are not the only
device that can listen to podcast.
In reality, an MP3 player is not even needed. According to preliminary
research done by the
University of Houston most students listen to podcasts sitting at a computer
and not on a portable device. The beauty of podcasting is the buzz it has given
multimedia resources online. Multimedia resources have been used on the internet
for a while but now they are more accessible and updated more frequently.
Another podcasting theory was to consistently produce new shows and
distribute them to audiences. The distribution is the other attraction. With the
use of RSS feeds, subscribing to podcast and receiving the latest broadcast is
easy and quick. Using iTunes, iPodder, or any other podcast receiving software
downloading the newest podcast can happen with out any searching or
clicking.
Which brings us back to the original idea of podcasting, plugging your iPod
to your computer and automatically downloading the newest podcast without
clicking. The term has created enough buzz to cause an evolution of the original
idea and stretch the idea and uses of podcasting.
