Mr. Alejandro Joins the Freedom Writers!

Fernando Alejandro, a third grade bilingual teacher at Gardens, was very honored to have the opportunity to meet Erin Gruwell, the founder of the Freedom Writers Institute, who inspired "The  Freedom Writers", a 2007 American film based on her book The Freedom Writers Diary. The title is a play on both the terms of "Freedom Riders", the black and white civil rights activists who tested the U.S. Supreme Court decision ordering the desegregation of interstate buses in 1961, and Freedom Fighters, as in somebody who fights for freedom.

Mr. Alejandro is also very proud to have been part of the last group of teachers, 150 of them, who were involved in a training session led by the Institute. The number 150 is symbolic of Erin’s original group of 150 freedom writer students in 1994. Teachers from all over the United States and Puerto Rico are selected to participate each year. Mr. Alejandro feels he was more than fortunate to have been invited to participate.
