PIRATE WRITING SCHOOL

Gardens Elementary Fourth Grade
Spring 2007

One of our activities was a skit, involving pirates who were obsessed with good grammar and refused to accept inappropriate utterances.

And the Pirates continued on their merry way, searching for more inadequate grammar users who could be made to walk the plank.

The fourth graders were an attentive audience to a book-reading of How I Became a Pirate (by Melinda Long)

We used this as a springboard for writing prompts for a variety of writing projects throughout the week. All of the 'products' were kept in a Pirate portfolio.

We used incentives such as Mardi Gras beads, pirate kerchiefs, skull rings and stickers to encourage the young writers. They had to earn them with their own efforts and skills. And no one had to walk the plank...
