Fourth Grade GT

 Figurative Language Unit

The fourth grade students are investigating figurative language, such as idioms and proverbs.  They are identifying the meanings of these phrases, which will help them experience higher level literature.  It will also make them more creative writers.

At the end of October, the fourth graders will create costumes based on the literal definitions of some popular idioms.  Footage of this event will be posted on this website at a later date.

IDIOM : A combination of words that has a meaning that is different from the meanings of the individual words.

  • It's raining cats and dogs!
  • It's time to hit the sack.
  • He was cool as a cucumber.

PROVERB : A short saying or sentence that is generally known by many people.                        The saying usually contains words of wisdom, truth, or morals that are based on common sense.

  • The early bird gets the worm.
  • You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink.
  • Two wrongs don't make a right.
