May 2008, Regular Meeting

A night of special recognitions
Several student and faculty special recognitions were the highlight of the May regular meeting. 

Sgt. David Garza presented Pasadena ISD Police Officers Association Scholarships to high school recipients. In addition, Alyta Harrell, principal at Beverly Hills Intermediate, introduced the recipients of the Great Women in Science and Technology Essay Contest. 

Billye Smith, principal at Pasadena Memorial High School, introduced recipients of the Federal Reserve Bank District 12 Essay Contest and the National Institute of Peace’s Essay Contest. Superintendent Dr. Kirk Lewis recognized Smith for receiving the A+ Principal’s Award. Alena Grinstead, Secondary Science Instructional Specialist, then introduced students/teachers from Dobie and South Houston high schools involved in the CERN Project in Switzerland.

Lewis also introduced the recipients of the Teacher of the Year Awards. They included:

Tonya Smith, Elementary Teacher of the Year

Kacee Howard, Secondary Teacher of the Year

Kymberly Quiroz, First-Year Elementary Teacher of the Year

Heidi Lovejoy, First-Year Secondary Teacher of the Year 

Scott Harrell, principal at Garfield Elementary, was recognized for being named District 4 TEPSAN of the Year for the Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association. 

The recognitions continued with Pam Tevis, Assistant Director for Athletics, Health and Physical Education, for being named the Outstanding District Coordinator for the Steps Consortium (CATCH Project) for Harris County. Lewis introduced Mel Capelo, principal at Williams Elementary, and teachers, Oscar Torres and David Garza, for leading the Williams CATCH Program so that it was named one of the two CATCH outstanding schools in Harris County. 

Harris County Deputy Don Nichols introduced principals and teachers from Rick Schneider Middle School, Parks Elementary, Stuchbery Elementary, Burnett Elementary and Kruse Elementary for their participation in the Food Drives 2007-08.

Siemens summer internship program
The Pasadena Independent School has again been awarded a grant from Siemens Corporation for a summer internship program at South Houston High School. Siemens is offering twenty-four South Houston High School students the opportunity to participate in their “Transitions” program. This program is a comprehensive educational program that teaches the life and work skills needed to obtain and maintain employment. 

As part of the program, the selected students will receive instruction at South Houston High School for four weeks. Upon successful completion, each student will receive a $599 stipend. The program will include the following units: 

• Communications

• Career Preparation

• Interpersonal Relationships

• On the Job

• Self Improvement 

The program will also pay three teachers for the organization, presentation and administration of the program. The program will include several local educational field trips and a graduation luncheon.
