Deadline for
Distinguished Alumnus nears
The Pasadena Independent School District Alumni
Association is accepting nominations for the district's Distinguished
Alumnus Award for 2002.
This annual award recognizes an alumnus who has made
significant contributions to society and whose accomplishments and
career have brought credit to the Pasadena school district. The honoree
will be recognized in March 2002. Deadline for applications is Dec. 12.
The award began in 1996, when the late Jonah Boyd was
honored with the award. He was a 1955 graduate of Pasadena High School
and served as principal of L.F. Smith Elementary from 1971-1995. The
following year 1962 PHS graduate Larry Forehand received the
Distinguished Alumnus Award. Forehand is founder and vice-president of
Casa Ole' Restaurants.

Pasadena's
Mr.
October
PHS
alumnus Bill Henry led call to arms in 1961 World Series, pair
of All Star games
A little magic happened on the rare occasion
Bill Henry threw a baseball.
Henry had only touched a baseball as a
elementary-aged kid playing in sandlot games. Shortly after he
graduated from Pasadena High School in 1946, he could be found
on the softball diamond playing with his co-workers for Shell
Oil, until a stranger came to town. However, this was no
ordinary onlooker to the game, it was a minor league baseball
manager.
"The man said, 'Let me see you throw
this...' He handed me a baseball and he wanted to see what I
could do when I threw the ball overhand," Henry said. At
that moment, a star was found on the sandlot softball fields of
Pasadena.
