Alumni Scholarships continued from front Holt was chosen by Dobie High School counselor Andrea Longoria. Longoria said that Holt balances many responsibilities well, including extracurricular and school activities. Holt was a cheerleader and also in the top percentile of her class. “I have been accepted to the University of Texas at Austin and will be pursuing an education degree,” Holt said. “I am very thankful for this scholarship and will definitely put it to good use.” Pasadena High School counselor Elena Ubias thought that Le deserved the scholarship based on his strong goal-oriented attitude, as well as his hard work in the classroom, which earned him a class rank of 13. Le will use the scholarship money at the University of Texas. He plans to major in biology to fulfill the prerequisites for pursuing a career in cardiology. “It has always been a dream of mine to become a doctor and help cure people,” Le said. “This scholarship will definitely assist me in that process.” The Sam Rayburn High School senior counselor, Denice Smajstrla, nominated Barnes for the Foundation scholarship. Her nomination was based on the fact that he was ranked number five in his senior class and earned a 5.1876 grade point average. “I plan to use the scholarship money toward my enrollment at the University of Texas, where I hope to major in aerospace engineering and minor in government,” said Barnes. “I feel that engineering best fits my natural skills. Aerospace engineering provides a means of challenging myself with a possibility of traveling to the stars.” “This is a good kid and he deserves this scholarship,” said Smajstrla. Caballero was nominated by senior counselor Beverly Bauer. Bauer based her nomination on Caballero’s hard work, not only in school, but also in the community and at her part-time job. Ranked number 13 in her class of 551, Caballero was a Texas Scholar, a 2002 Centurion honoree and a Semper Donates award recipient. She was also a member of the National Honor Society and Jets. She played on the school volleyball and basketball teams as well. Caballero was accepted to the University of Texas for the 2002 fall semester. “I will be majoring in aerospace engineering,” said Cabellero. “I want to be a part of the daily discoveries in space travel and technologies.” When Donna Williams, counselor at Tegeler Career Center, was asked to nominate a student for the Foundation scholarship, with no hesitation, she answered, “Melissa Patty-she definitely deserves this scholarship.” “Patty had no credits at the time of enrollment into Tegeler and was returning to high school after dropping out,” said Williams. “She fulfilled all of her credit requirements, earning 12.5 just this last year. I am so proud of her.” Patty had good attendance and earned a 4.31 grade point average. Found in another scholarship application, Patty was quoted as saying, “I plan to attend San Jacinto College in the fall. I want to enter the medical field and be a registered nurse. In addition to nursing, I want to further my education in my writing ability and literary knowledge. I have many goals and believe I can achieve them because I am hard working, determined, intelligent, willing and able.” “Melissa has walked to school on days that she did not have a ride," said Williams. “While our students are required to attend a five-hour session, Melissa regularly put in eight hours." Funding for the Pasadena ISD Education and Alumni Foundation 2001-02 scholarships was obtained from generous donations made by Pasadena ISD alumni and the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce. |
