'He simply loved kids'

Carroll Teague remembered for his
positive impact on students, teachers

Carroll Teague may be gone, but not forgotten. The longtime Pasadena ISD teacher and administrator died Feb. 22. His contributions to students and teachers, though, are everlasting. Teague, 88, was an avid volunteer at the elementary school that bears his namesake on Crenshaw Road, which opened in 1976.

“He was very visible here at the school,” Teague Elementary Principal Pat Rogers said. “If we ever needed him, all we had to do was call and he’d be here. You could find him reading to the children, judging science fairs, art contests or participating in other ways. He simply loved kids. Helping others was his life.”

After starting his career in education in Aldine, Teague came to Pasadena ISD in 1937 as a teacher at Jackson Intermediate School. In 1940, he became a teacher and football coach at Pasadena High School. After he received his master’s degree from the University of Houston, he served as principal at Golden Acres Elementary and South Houston Intermediate School. He was the first principal of South Houston High School when it opened in 1957.

In 1962, he took a position in central administration as the assistant superintendent for secondary schools. He retired from Pasadena ISD in 1967 and was then selected as superintendent for the Harris County Department of Education, a position he held through 1977.

Rogers said Teague served as an inspiration to the students and staff. “He was always encouraging them,” she said. “He would always make sure that he let each and every teacher and student know that they were important.”

The students returned their appreciation for Teague recently when he was in the hospital. Fourth and fifth grade students at Teague Elementary made him “get well” cards, which filled one wall is his hospital room. “That really lifted his spirits,” Rogers said.

Rogers’ fondest memories of Teague was his attendance at several Successful School banquets. “The first time we received exemplary status, Mr. Teague and his wife made it a point to attend the banquet,” she said. “He rode to the banquet with us on the school bus. He was constantly showing his support. He was a true educator, first and foremost.”

A memorial service was held for Teague at Pasadena First United Methodist Church on Fairmont Parkway on March 1.

“Carroll Teague had a heart for children,” said Pasadena ISD Superintendent Rick Schneider. “His contributions to this district and our community will never be forgotten.”
