Fall

Students:

  • Make as high a grade as possible since your transcript begins in your freshman year (unless you previously earned Spanish and / or algebra credit).

  • Take the most challenging coursework possible, as colleges are looking for students at the top half of their class.

  • Volunteer! Community service is part of the application process, as well as many scholarship process.

  • READ as much as possible to improve your SAT/ACT score.

  • Start your resume package with a list of school activities, awards, community service and employment.

Parents:

  • Monitor all 3 week progress reports.  have a list of phone extensions and email addresses of your child's teachers and counselor.  Be proactive with student personnel and do not assume you will be contacted if there is a problem.

  • Encourage and support your child in academic as well as extracurricular programs.  it is a good idea for your student to have a wide variety of activities and interests.

  • Encourage your son/daughter to begin thinking about those areas of interest in choosing appropriate subjects in school.

  • Your student needs to volunteer and get involved in community activities.  Sometimes employment on a summer or part time basis is beneficial to "give something back" to society.

  • Encourage your student if they want to work on a part time or summer basis.  Working too many hours during the school year can hinder a student's performance in school.

  • Begin looking at financial aid options or college, i.e. savings vs. government grants and loans.  A good website to visit is www.collegeboard.com .
