Pasadena ISD G/T Certification Courses

 

Day 1 -- Ways Through the Maze:  Identifying the G/T Student   [Required component (nature and needs) of the 30 clock hour minimum G/T certification]  Learn to recognize giftedness and potential giftedness in your classroom.  Explore the characteristics, procedures and forms for identification.

Day 2 -- Pieces of the Puzzle:  Assessing the Needs of the G/T Student  [Required component (assessing student needs) of the 30 clock hour minimum G/T certification]  Discover practical methods to uncover G/T students' areas of strength and weakness to improve instruction.  Explore the social/emotional needs of the gifted/talented.

Day 3 -- Next Steps:  Components of a G/T Program  Examine the issues and trends in gifted education.  Explore program models and options available to serve gifted students.  Identify methods to differentiate the processes, products and content in the curriculum.

Day 4 -- More Pieces of the Puzzle:  Meeting the Needs of the G/T Student [Required component (curriculum differentiation) of the 30 clock hour minimum G/T certification]  Match the unique characteristics of the G/T student to curricular needs.  Examine resources available for use in your classroom.

Day 5 -- The Teacher Makes the Difference:  The G/T Student in the Classroom  Apply strategies for differentiating curriculum in your classroom.  Learn a variety of management techniques that enhance G/T students' learning while allowing the teacher to work with those who need additional instruction.

Important Notes:

Chap. 89.2 states that prior to assignment teachers who provide instruction as part of a program for gifted students must complete a minimum of 30 clock hours of professional development in gifted education.

 

Teachers who attend G/T sessions outside the district must submit their attendance certificates to the G/T office.  Once verified, that information will be added to the district (PPAVAT) professional training records.

Secondary teachers who attend College Board AP or PreAP training may submit their attendance certificates to receive up to 12 hours of credit.  They still need to complete Days 1, 2 an 4 of the district certification courses to meet the state G/T certification requirements.

Day 3 & 5 Focuses on  curriculum differentiation, and program components 
as well as strategies and techniques for use in the classroom

Day 4 --- More Pieces of the Puzzle (required component curriculum differentiation)
