1999 GIFTED/TALENTED SUMMER EXPLORATION CAMPS
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
Pasadena ISD has successfully offered summer programs designed specifically for elementary
and intermediate school gifted/talented students. Since they continued to be well received
three Summer Exploration Camps were proposed for 1999.
Two Elementary Summer Exploration Camps - One designed for students in
kindergarten, grades 1 and 2 and the other camp for students in grades 3, 4 and 5.
Primary Camp (K-2) focused on developing the students creative potential while
exploring theater arts and technology applications (including Lego building units).
Students worked independently and in small groups. The camp culminated in a
presentation of original plays and puppet shows written and performed by students to share
with parents and others at the close of the camp. The primary camp was offered at
Frazier Elementary for one four-day week (June 14-17) from 8:30 AM-11:30 AM each day.
Tuition was set at $25 per student.
Elementary Camp (gr. 3-5) motivated interest and creativity through the exploration of
French and Spanish languages, theater art/drama productions, technology applications using
Microsoft PowerPoint, and science explorations using hands on activities. The two week
camp culminated with a theater art production, Microsoft PowerPoint presentation and a
variety of activities to share with family and friends. The elementary camp was
offered at Meador Elementary for two four-day weeks (June 7-10, and 14-17) from 8:15 AM to
11:45 AM each day. Tuition was set at $50 per student.
Secondary Summer Exploration Camp - Serving students in grades 6 and 7, this
camp included a partnership with NASA where students visited specific sites in
order to explore, research and assist in creating modules that will be used by NASA in
future programs. Students worked on site at NASA with engineers for two days of the
camp. They were also involved in learning to use Microsoft PowerPoint to produce a
multi-media presentation to share with parents and others. The camp culminated in a
visit behind the scenes to the Houston Burke Baker Planetarium. Since these students
were working toward the Distinguished Achievement Program, this opportunity exposed them
to planning and producing original products. This camp was offered at Southmore
Intermediate for three four-day weeks (June 7-10, 14-17, and 21-24) from 8:30 AM-12:30
each day. Due to the involvement with NASA and the planetarium visit, enrollment
was
limited to 80 students. Tuition was set at $75 per student.
All camps were designed to enhance students potential for success in future
challenging studies. They were non graded and not for credit with each culminating in
presentations to be shared with family and community.
Campuses were encouraged to underwrite the participation of students whose parents cannot
afford the tuition with their campus g/t funds. .
