| Section 504 is part of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. It is an anti-discrimination law that protects people with disabilities. |
| What Qualifies a Child for 504? |
| Students might qualify for services
under Section 504 if they have a physical or mental impairment that
substantially limits a major life activity such as walking, seeing,
hearing, speaking, breathing, learning or working. These services
fall under the regular education program.
The impairment must substantially limit one of these activities for the student to qualify. If the student struggles more than the average person to complete a task, substantial limitation may exist. Substantial limitation is determined by a committee of people knowledgeable about the child and the methods of assessment. |
| How Will It Help My Child? |
| If you child qualifies under Section 504, the services he or she may receive are accommodations in the regular classroom, which can enable the child to be successful in school. Certain temporary disabilities and behavior problems may also qualify a student for Section 504 services. |
