SAT 1 & PSAT/NMSQT

SAT I

The SAT Program, sponsored by the College Board, supports educational excellence for all students through continuous collaboration with more than 3,000 member schools, universities, colleges and education systems.

Purpose

Used for college entrance, SAT I scores allow students to compare their academic preparation and aptitude with over two million other students who take the SAT I yearly. Although grades, class rank and other accomplishments are the best signs of how well students will do in college, the SAT I shows student knowledge and ability independent of grades.

Assessments

The SAT I measures only verbal and mathematical reasoning abilities that continually improve through work done alone and in school. The SAT I does not measure drive, creativity or other special talents that can also help a student in college.

Tests

Each test book contains seven sections that are individually-timed and may appear in any order. A total of three hours is allowed for the entire test.

The test contains two 30-minute and one 15-minute verbal sections; two 30-minute and one 15-minute mathematics sections. Some questions require a student produced response. Although calculators may be used on the mathematics sections, they are not required.

There is also a 30-minute equating section of verbal and mathematics questions that does not count toward a student's score. (Some of the questions help ensure that scores on new SAT I test are equivalent to scores on earlier editions. Others are new and may be used in future editions of the SAT I.)

Scores

Students receive one score for verbal questions and one score for mathematics questions. The combined score from the verbal and mathematics sections ranges from 400 to 1600.

PSAT/NMSQT

The main purpose of the PSAT/NMSQT is to enter scholarship competitions, like the National Merit Scholarship competition conducted during the student's junior year of high school. It also allows students to request information from colleges about programs, activities and financial aid available through the Student Search Service.

Assessments

The PSAT/NMSQT is a shortened version of the SAT I. It measures the same verbal and mathematics skills and includes a writing skills section.

Tests

The PSAT/NMSQT includes five individually-timed sections. Students are told when to begin and end each section. The PSAT/NMSQT requires a total of two hours and 10 minutes to complete.

The test contains two 25-minute verbal sections, two 25-minute math sections; and one 30 minute writing skills section. Although calculators may be used on the mathematics section, they are not required.

Scores

Students receive one score for verbal questions, one score for mathematics questions and one score for the writing skills. The scores are based on a 20 to 80 point scale, averaging about 50, which offers students details about their test taking skills and insight into their academic preparation. The total score is reported by a selection index (SI) used for scholarship competition.
