Two-Way Dual Language FAQs:

What is Two-Way Dual Language?

TWDL is a program in which native English-speakers and native Spanish-speakers are taught the regular school curriculum in both languages.

What are the benefits of Two-Way Dual Language?

In addition to the obvious social and economic benefits of bilingualism, TWDL students can be expected to reach higher levels of language proficiency than students in other school-based language programs.  Furthermore, over time, proficient TWDL learners exhibit greater nonverbal problem-solving abilities and more flexible thinking than other learners (Met, 1998).

Will my child remain on grade-level?

In our experience, most TWDL learners have remained at or above grade level in their native language, and after just a few years of participation in the program, they have managed to catch up in their second language as well.  (It is important to note that for official grade reporting purposes, students are assessed only in their native language.  Progress in the second language is reported through a separate means.)

How can I enroll my child?

Parents who wish to enroll their child in the program must complete an application and consent to have their child tested.  TWDL has a limited enrollment capacity, and only those students who demonstrate proficiency with their first language are considered for admission.  Applications will be accepted at Laura Bush Elementary's Parent Round-Up on April 14th, 2010.  For information concerning additional opportunities to apply or for more specific details about the program, please contact Whitney Shook at wshook@pasadenaisd.org
